Take Control of Your Career

When did you know it was time to take control of your career?

This month, I was featured in a Nasdaq article about that moment.

Taking control, to me = adulting.

Outside of work, that can mean moving into parenthood, caretaking for our elders, taking our finances more seriously, slowing down a bit as we mature.

But what does adulting look like at work?

In guiding hundreds of womxn in career transitions, promotions, and developing leadership skills, many share that it means:

  • Taking on more responsibilities
  • Having our comp to reflect our expertise
  • Entering our peak earning years (age 44 according to Payscale)
  • Creating visibility opportunities with senior leadership
  • Developing executive presence
  • Going for a strategic leadership role
  • Pivoting careers

What’s the moment when you decided to be in charge of your own career?

For me, it happened when I was offered a second 3 year deal at Madam Secretary, a top ten network show I was writing and producing for. It was a great job - great team, great female leadership and yet, at that moment, I had to ask:

Do I keep on the path of least resistance?
Or make a choice that aligns who I’ve been with who I’m becoming?

The answer to that question had me take a sabbatical, travel, and return to found and lead what is now AC Electric.

I don’t often think about what would have happened if I had stayed, but I know the feeling that I wasn’t living my potential, or fulfilling my purpose, or even that I wasn’t in the right setting wouldn’t have gone away. There would have been positives to staying, of course and a hard pivot into leadership is not everyone’s destiny or even their goal. Everyone has to do what’s best for them.

But for those of you who have made the decision to ascend in leadership:

What’s the moment you decided to take control of your career?
Or is that choice coming?
