Acknowledged at the End of Year Review?

How do you get rewarded for the unsung work you’re doing?

You’re smart. You’re highly capable. You figure it out. So you do a lot of things and do them well. And you get good feedback - “Sounds good! Keep going!”

There’s just one catch:

You’re getting recognized, but not rewarded.

Thanksgiving week is a time to, take stock of what we’re grateful for. And there’s a lot. It also arrives just before year end reviews when we’re also thinking of what’s next for us, be it a promotion, raise, performance feedback and/or better resources and support.

The trouble is when we find ourselves going above and beyond without a proper reward. This can result in various emotions: resentment, frustration, and burnout to name a few.

But let me ask you this -- how much of the above and beyond work ACTUALLY serves your brand, long term career goals or vision?

I’m all about fair comp for hard work, but less so when the activities you’re doubling down on aren’t the ones that lead to your leadership and career destination.

Here’s a better way:

  • getting clear on your long term leadership destination
  • building a brand around it
  • presenting as the go-to expert and thought leader on that topic to senior leaders

Which means:

  • clearly communicating those things to senior leaders
  • creating opportunities to flex the skills and wins you want to be known for

No more aligning your worth or comp to the stuff you used to be known for, or just generally crush because crushing things is what you do.

Just because you’re good at something doesn't mean you have to be known for it.

Saying “yes please” to leadership, means learning to say “no thanks.”

Curious: At work, what’s the one place you KNOW you need to say “no thanks?”

It’s such a critical skill, for women leaders in particular. I can’t think of a student who doesn’t face this. Please share. I’m happy to weigh in if I’ve got a thought.
