“I want to be more intentional and strategic in my next career move but where do I find the time?”

Every stage of life comes with its challenges. In mid-career, it can feel like it’s all hitting at once: young kids, aging parents, seeking or tending to partnerships, getting serious about money… all while being intentional about your leadership opportunities, which feels again like crowding an already overstuffed elevator.

Great American philosopher, Ferris Bueller once said:

“Life comes at you fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you might miss it.”

And while he certainly wasn’t talking about your mid-career strategy, he’s not wrong.

It’s kind of ironic.

We want strategic leadership roles… yet make no time to be strategic about our roles.

Life comes at you fast.

In mid career, stopping to look around is exactly what keeps you from missing ‘it’

In this case “missing it” is not riding a float through Chicago, but in some ways equally priceless. It’s:

  • Confidently forging a path toward a long term career destination
  • Raising your comp so you’re being paid as an expert and leader
  • Moving up and not laterally
  • Building a unique brand and value prop that makes you a go-to for opps
  • Establishing your thought leadership
  • Restoring happiness and mental well being at work and in the rest of life

To make the time to prioritize our career growth, to work smarter, not harder, to have time for all of life’s equally rich and fulfilling responsibilities, we need to upgrade how we think about our time.

Prioritizing strategic thinking time - first about your career, then you org - is a leadership skill.
