What Your Boss Wants from You
"What do I do to impress my manager?"
It's almost the end of the quarter — so this may mean review time for you. This means a lot of feedback. So let's get one thing out of the way.
I know you're great at your role.
I know that you:
- Work hard
- Take it for the team
- Produce results
That includes your manager. Your 1x1s are glowing. You are praised to the higher heavens, and yet... You're not feeling the love when it comes to:
- Expanding your responsibility
- Making it into the right meetings
- Being on the best projects
It's okay to admit it.
I've heard the same unfortunate story from hundreds of high-potential corporate women, savvy and ambitious enough to book a leadership coach for a consult:
Your manager's feedback is vague and ambiguous.
Under the best circumstances, he or she is busy, overworked, trying to spend a bunch of plates for their boss. They'll mutter something about "being a leader," maybe recommend a book but decoding what's actionable is on you.
Here’s 3 keystone habits all leaders, no matter their style, should strive for:
1️⃣ Solution-Oriented: In a sea of business problems, be the life raft who, every time she finds a problem, even if she's the one to bring it up or cause it, has at least a few moves to address it.
2️⃣ Influence: Surest path to convincing other people to do things your way is to match your needs to the org or your boss's objectives. Create win-wins.
3️⃣ Vision: Take the time to get clarity and certainty on what you see for the org, industry, and yourself. Articulate a desired future. It doesn't matter if you know all the steps; the first few will do.
