High achiever. High Potential… High expectations?
Early on, I earned an Ivy League degree & had relatively quick successes in my career as a TV writer.
For a time, breaking into TV and landing a dream role and moving up the ranks producing for the Colbert Report, winning a Peabody for our election coverage - it had me feeling on top of the world for a little while.
Then came the crisis, of sorts.
At the time, there were few jobs in late night in NYC (in the prehistoric era before streaming) and it became clear that everyone else was sitting pretty... and sitting tight.
I didn’t see a path to promotion. My potential felt capped.
So, after extensive job searches, I moved across the country for a job I actually didn’t want.
Sure, it was on TV, but it wasn’t the type of work that made me excited to wake up every morning.
I knew I wanted to fulfill my potential, but I did it by letting my expectations and values slip through the cracks on the promise that this job would eventually get me where I actually wanted to be.
It was not a good fit. And within 7 months, I was let go.
And thank goodness! Something so important was missing - the feeling deep down that I was making a significant impact on the world & that I was creating the path I wanted.
This compelled me to search for roles with more meaning. Doing my best to figure out how to break through when you’re the only woman in the room. Or the only person with a bi-cultural ethnicity. And finally, to start my own business helping women craft their own path and write their own leadership stories in the process.
What I discovered about myself then has played out over & over again with the 500+ womxn I’ve coached over the past 4 years and led me to come up with the Career Strategy GPS program - a method to get clarity on where you want to be long term, then reverse engineer the steps you need to get there, starting with developing the vision setting, storytelling and influencing skills to hold out for or create the jobs that fulfill your potential AND align with your values.
