I've Been A Leadership Coach to 400+ Womxn: Here's 4 Principles of Advancing Your Career
"I want to approach my next role more strategically. How do I figure out my next career move?"
For decades leading up to my mid-career, I've led my life like a Roomba. The move was: shoot steadily forward, suck up particles of self-knowledge along the way, hit a wall, change course.
This is how I moved from jobs in:
- Travel writing
- Art auctioneering/conservation
- Magazine publishing
- TV writing/producing
- Women's leadership coaching
When it comes to choosing a career, cultivating a relationship with yourself - what drives and inspires you - is necessary.
However, advancement in a chosen career, means cultivating relationships with others. And that is a whole other ballgame.
Here's what I wish I understood then that, as a career and leadership coach who coached 400+ womxn at Google, Oracle, Panasonic, Apple & more, I teach now :
1) Know what you're going for
Take the time to understand what you're aiming for. It will help you understand which skills and relationships to cultivate.
2) The next great opportunity is a result of a good relationship
Invest in your network. Build authentic relationships. Stay in touch. Care about each other as human beings. People facilitate opportunities.
3) You don't deserve a promotion; you earn it
Doing a great job is good but not enough. Find ways to perform the role you aspire to and crush that. People trust results over potential. Of course, exceptions apply here.
4) Empathy will always serve you
You don't have to adore your boss or teammates, but if you're making a serious go of a workplace, striving to understand them will only serve you and make you the compassionate leader your future colleagues deserve.
Looking to approach your next career move strategically? I can help with that. Here are a few ways to start.
