3 Key Pieces of Your Story Recruiters And Managers Need to Bring You That Next Level Role
Imagine the inbox of anyone with the power to get you to your next level role - your manager or a recruiter...
In fact, don't imagine it. I'll tell you.
Last week I spoke with Nicki Cutler, an exec level recruiter & talent acquisition expert who pulled the curtain back on the behind the scenes of getting your next role.
Our Lady of Job Searches, Nicki Cutler
Have A Quick Hit Narrative Ready To Go
Nicki says: "To have someone stand out out of the hundreds of applicants I see each day, I gotta have quick hits, bullet points in an email or message that I can frame to fit the role I'm filling."
My hot take: Though you might think it's Nicki or your manager's job to frame your narrative for you, when you're fielding that many candidates or fires to put out, the clearest narrative is the simplest to explain.
Recruiters and managers play telephone with your story to the executives who make the decision, so do the leg work for your future and frame your facts to serve the hiring company's needs.
People are time starved,
spoon feed them your narrative.
Build A Story Around Your Role's Success Metric
Nicki says: "In my role in HR, I'm judged on time it took to fill a role, how long a new hire lasts at a company, how much it cost to bring them in, how satisfied the hiring managers that employ me are with my process & results."
My hot take: 3 things move the needle here with almost any role:
How much $ you made or saved
How much time you saved (time = $)
How much exposure you created (exposure = $)
Find some figures or details in your work that quantify your value.
Basic: "I drive revenue."
Boss: "My In the Know campaign netted 3 spreads in the New York Times, Daily Beast & Architectural Digest that gained our brand a 40% increased visibility in the form of followers across social platforms, particularly Instagram & Facebook."
Money fuels the engine of capitalism.
Ignite your professional narrative by dousing it in ga$$$.
Tell The Story Of Your Results
Nicki says: "If one more person tells me they generated results, I'm going to --- okay. You get results. Tell me that story."
My hot take: Let's get basic - what's a story? It's a series of linked events with a beginning middle & end that show progression and change. In the context of your professional narratives, it's about how you, the heroine of the story elevated a business problem through your actions. A handy way to do this is by using the STAR method in interviews or 1:1s with your manager.
Basic: "I am a results oriented professional."
Boss: "When my mid-sized firm got bought by Autodesk, I spearheaded & lead my teams' integration into the larger Autodesk culture by organizing and running a series of fact finding conversations and designing new workflows that resulted in returning to 100% productivity within 3 months."
Every story is a transformation story.
