Why High Achieving Female Leaders Leave Money on the Table at Negotiation and What to do About It
When was the last time you were truly satisfied with your comp?
When women tell me about what it costs them not to move into the next level, money is often top of mind.
“The loss of income is already a reality.”
“I’ve lost at least $1 million”
“I have come to accept a lower salary than I should and it's also making my job search difficult and time consuming.”
When it comes to comp, here’s the chain of events:
Accept a salary → realize it’s not enough (for whatever reason) → decide to renegotiate (at same org or elsewhere) → rush the process or waver → accept a salary → realize it’s not enough → and we’re running the same script
As a career coach, it’s hard to watch. Especially if you’ve done all this work to articulate and message your value, gone through the interview/renegotiation gauntlet and at the last stretch, accept a number lower than the one you know would make you happy.
Sure, you might get the job, but you’re likely to walk into it with a chip on your shoulder (or grow one not too far into your tenure).
As great as the role might be, you will always wonder: what if I’d stuck to my guns and held out for just a bit more?
There are one of two outcomes:
You get the higher number
You don’t and have to find another role that pays you what you’re worth
Either way, you avoid resenting your org and yourself from Day 1, which is priceless.
But it’s not easy to hold the line, especially in the last leg of what can sometimes feel like a marathon. This is when feelings of unworthiness or fear can shake the confidence of even the greatest business diva.
Talking about money can be very taboo. Especially as women. But this last stretch is the moment to find a sounding board. It’s the final phase of career transition but the place that, without support, you could find all that hard work comes undone.
This and many more frameworks and tactics for increasing comp by at least 15% and s much as $100K in our new Career Strategy GPS program:
